# Profile tags

> Find people by what you want to remember. Search personal tags, create sub-tags, and apply them while browsing X.

Tags categorize people. A label such as `AI People → Educators` helps you recognize someone who teaches a topic you want to learn.

Hover over a name in your timeline to search your personal tags, create a sub-tag, and apply it without leaving the post. The collection selector stays empty, so the tag belongs to your personal account.

<FeatureClip video="/videos/features/profile-tags-workflow.mp4" width={960} height={1080} alt="Hovering over Karpathy, searching personal AI People tags, clearing the search, creating the Educators sub-tag, applying it, and seeing the label on his post." />

## Apply a tag to a profile

1. Open someone's profile, or hover over their name or profile photo on a post.
2. In the Whodis section, choose **+ Add a tag** or **Edit tags**.
3. Use **Search tags** to find a label, then select its checkbox.
4. Choose **Done** to close the editor. Changes save as you make them.

Applied tags appear in the person's hovercard and profile, and above the text of their posts.

## Create tags and sub-tags

Clear **Search tags** to show the creation controls. Choose **New tag**, enter a name, and choose the checkmark.

To make a more specific label, expand a top-level tag and choose **New sub-tag**. Create `Educators` under `AI People`, then select the new sub-tag's checkbox to apply it. Creating a label and applying it are separate actions.

## Keep tags personal or organize them in a collection

Leave **Add to a collection** unselected to use personal tags. Open **Tags** in the Whodis side panel to manage those labels and browse the people you have categorized.

Choose a collection in the tag editor when you want labels to belong to that collection instead. Collection tags follow the collection's visibility. Open **Collections** in the side panel to revisit those people alongside the collection's notes and bookmarks.

[Collections](/features/collections) connect the people you categorize with the context and posts you save. Making a selected collection public does not publish your separate personal tags.

## Remove a tag

Open **Edit tags** and clear a tag's checkbox to remove it from that person. The label stays available for other people.

To rename or delete a personal tag, open **Tags** in the side panel and choose the tag. Deleting a top-level tag also deletes its sub-tags, after confirmation.

Use a [profile note](/features/profile-notes) when you want to explain the context in your own words, or [bookmark a post](/features/bookmarks) when you want to save what someone shared.
